Becoming a participant: Colleges and Universities (United States)
Classification
The goal of the ARTstor classification system is fairness. The ARTstor classification system for institutions of higher education is based primarily on the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education (2000). This system "groups American colleges and universities according to their missions," offering an opportunity to relate participation fees to the extent to which an institution regards research as a fundamental aim. The Carnegie classes are well understood within the higher education community and the assignment of institutions to a Carnegie category is done by a respected outside party.
ARTstor classifies United States institutions of higher education into six categories in an attempt to fairly assess fees for participation. We have done our best to ensure that institutions with similar characteristics reside in the same category. If your institution is already a JSTOR participant, your ARTstor classification will mirror your JSTOR classification. If your institution does not participate in JSTOR, please contact the ARTstor Library Relations team to determine your classification.
To determine your ARTstor classification, please complete the Participation Form.
Participation Fees
Colleges and Universities in the United States pay two fees to participate in ARTstor: the Archive Capital Fee (ACF) and an Annual Access Fee (AAF). The ACF will help ensure that as new technologies and standards emerge, ARTstor will be in a position to respond and adapt our content and tools. The AAF helps cover part of the annual costs of maintaining the Digital Library and our services; among other functions, these ongoing efforts include improving image and data quality, supporting users and participating institutions, and adapting and improving the software.
Participating institutions enter a site-wide license permitting unlimited simultaneous access to the Digital Library by all faculty, staff, and students at the institution (as well as to walk-in users). In addition, participants have access to a dedicated support team and a variety of training opportunities.
Participation fees vary depending upon the ARTstor classification for each institution. Once you have determined your ARTstor classification — either by using your JSTOR classification or via submission of the Participation Form — please consult the participation fees below.

|---|---|---|
| Very Large | $40,000 | $20,000 |
| Large | $25,000 | $12,500 |
| Medium | $17,000 | $8500 |
| Small | $10,000 | $5000 |
| Very Small | $6000 | $3000 |
| Community College | $1000 | $1200 |
