Becoming a participant: K-12 Schools
Classification
ARTstor considered a number of variables when developing a classification methodology for K-12 Schools. Since there is no generally recognized classification system (like the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, which formed the basis for the ARTstor and JSTOR participation fee structure for higher education institutions), we have worked with the primary and secondary school community to determine a number of parameters that will enable us to consider the communities that each school serves, as well as to assess the value ARTstor could bring to each institution.
We have established three levels of K-12 School classification: Schools I, Schools II, and Schools III. These levels are based on parameters that best reflect these key points:
- The student population of the school
- The value of the resource to enhance teaching and learning in the classroom
ARTstor uses the following information to determine a K-12 school's classification:
- Total money spent per student per year (public schools) OR tuition per year (independent schools)
- Student full-time enrollment (FTE) at the school
The following tables provide the guidelines we use to assign a "score" for each classification parameter:
| Full-time Enrollment | FTE Score |
|---|---|
| 800 and above | 3 |
| 500-799 | 2 |
| 1-499 | 1 |
| Investment/Student | Investment/Student Score |
|---|---|
| $13,000 and above | 3 |
| $7000 - $12,999 | 2 |
| Less than $7000 | 1 |
Classification will be based on the sum of the FTE score and the Investment/Student score:
| Total Points | ARTstor Classification |
|---|---|
| 5-6 | Schools I |
| 3-4 | Schools II |
| 2 | Schools III |
Please submit the K-12 School Participation Form in order to help us determine your institution's classification and facilitate your access to ARTstor.
Participation Fees
K-12 schools are asked to pay an annual fee to participate in ARTstor. As a non-profit organization, the annual fee for accessing ARTstor helps cover part of the annual costs of maintaining the Digital Library and our services; among other functions, these ongoing efforts include improving image and data quality, supporting users and participating institutions, and adapting and improving the software.
Participating institutions enter a site-wide license permitting unlimited simultaneous access to the Digital Library by all staff and users at the institution.
Participation fees vary depending upon the ARTstor classification of each institution. Once you have determined your ARTstor classification based on the guidelines in Step 1, please consult the participation fees below.
| ARTstor Classification | AAF (annual) |
|---|---|
| Schools I | $1500 |
| Schools II | $750 |
| Schools III | $250 |
ARTstor Participation for School Districts and Groups
Because school districts and groups in the K-12 community vary widely in their organization, we will need to discuss ARTstor participation for these institutions on a case-by-case basis. Please email participation@artstor.org for more information.
Institutions wishing to participate in ARTstor will need to review and sign an ARTstor Digital Library License Agreement. If you would like to proceed with ARTstor participation, please move forward to Step 3 to obtain the appropriate License Agreement for your institution.
