In-depth documentation of the ancient world from Sites and Photos

April 2, 2009

ARTstor is collaborating with Sites and Photos to share approximately 90,000 images in the Digital Library documenting the ancient world, including Classical, Megalithic, Islamic, Crusader, and Gothic archaeology and architecture, as well as Greek and Roman painting, sculpture, mosaics, and decorative arts. The collection will be especially strong in its coverage of religious and Biblical sites in Israel, Jordan, Tunisia, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Spain, Malta, and Cyprus.

Sites and Photos will provide extensive documentation of each location, recording all extant monuments and structures, such as theaters, amphitheaters, odeons, gymnasiums, stadiums, hippodromes, temples, synagogues, basilicas and churches, monasteries and convents, mosques, council meeting halls, archives, treasuries, bathhouses, libraries, agoras and forums, fortifications, reliefs, aqueducts, dams, pools, houses, villas, palaces, gardens, and more. Samuel Magal, Owner and Chief Photographer of Sites and Photos, is a trained archaeologist specializing in Classical and Marine archaeology. Since 1999, he has photographed hundreds of sites and museums throughout the Mediterranean.
