Christine Kuan
Director of Collection Development
Christine Kuan is the Director of Collection Development for ARTstor. She is responsible for convening the collection development committee that reviews ARTstor’s collections and recommends collection opportunities; identifying collections that should be made available through the ARTstor Digital Library; working closely with scholars, librarians, artists, galleries, and others to enhance ARTstor’s content and services; and communicating with both content providers and users about ARTstor’s aims, tools, and mission.
From 2003-2007, Kuan served as the Senior Editor of Grove Art Online and the Grove Dictionaries of Art at Oxford University Press. In this role, she directed Grove Art’s print and online editorial program, and implemented its first digital image collection. She formed this successful collection by securing partnerships with a diverse range of sources—including museums, galleries, scholars, stock photo agencies, and individual artists. In addition, she has collaborated with more than 1,000 international art historians to commission, update, and augment the content within Grove Art Online, and to produce a number of award-winning scholarly publications in art history. Prior to joining Oxford University Press, Kuan worked on museum education programs and special exhibitions, as well as cultural property and intellectual property issues at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She has taught literature and writing at Rutgers University, the University of Iowa and Beijing University.
Kuan received her MFA from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and her BA in Art History and English Literature from Rutgers University. She has also studied art history at the University of Bristol, and with the founder and director of the International Dada Archive.
