Christine Kuan
Chief Curatorial Officer and Vice President for External Affairs
Christine Kuan is responsible for the collections and communications strategy for ARTstor. Kuan oversees the departments of Collection Development, Museum Relations, Metadata, Production, Communications, and Creative Services and is responsible for working closely with museums, archives, libraries, artists, artists' estates, scholars, and photographers to enhance ARTstor's collections and services. She works with senior staff to shape future directions and policies for ARTstor, and cultivates relationships with the international arts community in the service of ARTstor's mission.
From 2003-2007, Kuan served as the Senior Editor of Grove Art Online and the Grove Dictionaries of Art at Oxford University Press. In this role, she directed Grove Art's print and online editorial program, and implemented its first digital image collection. She formed this successful collection by securing partnerships with a diverse range of sources—including museums, galleries, scholars, stock photo agencies, and individual artists. In addition, she has collaborated with more than 1,000 international art historians to commission, update, and augment the content within Grove Art Online, and to produce a number of award-winning scholarly publications in art history. Prior to joining Oxford University Press, Kuan worked in the Department of Asian Art and in the General Counsel's Office at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. She has taught literature and writing at Rutgers University, the University of Iowa, and Beijing University.
Kuan received her MFA from the Iowa Writers' Workshop and her BA in Art History and English Literature from Rutgers University. She has also studied art history at the University of Bristol, and with the founder and director of the International Dada Archive. From 2007-2010, she served on the College Art Association Publications Committee. She currently serves on the Advisory Board for Rhizome, an organization dedicated to the creation, presentation, preservation, and critique of emerging artistic practices that engage technology based at the New Museum in New York City.
