Features

Shared Shelf is a web-based image management software service that will provide support for managing and actively using images — cataloging, editing, storing, and sharing them. Shared Shelf will also enable seamless integration of image collections with the ARTstor Digital Library. The Shared Shelf Software as a Service (SaaS) allows for the remote hosting of software and digital assets on ARTstor servers without requiring local installation and maintenance, and offers workflow support by helping to define roles and privileges to allow individuals within an institution, or across institutions (such as members of the Society of Architectural Historians) to manage the uploading, cataloging, storage, and sharing of digital assets.
Shared Shelf provides four major components:
- Cataloging Tools: Tools will provide flexible metadata entry screens to serve both expert and non-expert catalogers. Catalogers will be able to customize display templates, create local controlled vocabulary lists, access shared community-built vocabularies, and perform bulk editing.
- Vocabulary Warehouse: The warehouse will house existing controlled vocabularies (such as the Getty Union List of Artist Names (ULAN)™, the Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names (TGN)™, and the Getty Art and Architecture Thesaurus (AAT)™) and provide tools which will enable users to submit new creator names and work records into a single pool where anyone can access, download, and use these records.
- Digital Asset Management: Shared Shelf will store high-resolution source images. We are exploring the extent to which we will support the management and use of QuickTime Virtual Reality (QTVR), audio, and video files.
- Publish to the Web and Export Tools: Institutions will be able to control and restrict how broadly their collections are made available online and can easily deliver those digital assets and data to various outlets. Images may be made available to the ARTstor Digital Library and to open-access websites, or may be restricted to a particular institution or group of institutions.
