Dallas Museum of Art Collection
Overview
The Dallas Museum of Art holds a collection of more than 23,000 works of art from around the world, from ancient to modern times. With strengths in the arts of the ancient Americas, Africa, Indonesia, and South Asia, the collection also features works of European and American art. Selections from the Dallas Museum of Art's collection are represented in ARTstor with over 1500 works in various media, ranging from ancient artifacts to contemporary art.
The Dallas Museum of Art was established in 1903, as an outgrowth of the Art Committee of the Dallas Public Library. The committee members formed the Dallas Art Association, creating an art gallery in the library, and also purchasing pictures for the collection. In 1909, the Dallas Art Association donated the collection to the City of Dallas and moved it to a new building located on the state fairgrounds, as the Free Public Art Gallery of Dallas. Over time, the museum moved to several locations, and also merged its collections with the Dallas Museum for Contemporary Arts. When the museum moved to its present downtown location in 1984, the name was changed to the Dallas Museum of Art.
This collection was formerly in the AMICO Library.
