Ralph Lieberman: Architectural Photography
ARTstor is sponsoring new photography by Ralph Lieberman. Lieberman has provided superb images for a rich array of scholarly publications in the history of art and architecture on topics ranging from the travel sketches of Louis Kahn to Italian Renaissance gardens, and from the architecture of Giorgio Vasari to that of Renaissance Venice. In 2006-2007, ARTstor sponsored an extended photographic campaign in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania which focused on the city's historic and contemporary architecture, as well as its public art and sculpture. This campaign complements the substantial body of work Lieberman has previously done in Philadelphia, which provided the images for Michael J. Lewis' important study of the architecture Frank Furness. Lewis, Professor of Art at Williams College served as a consultant to the campaign. ARTstor is also sponsoring an ongoing campaign to document museum architecture in the United States. To date, Lieberman has photographed museums in the Midwest, New England, and Texas. In addition to new photography by Lieberman, ARTstor has partnered with Harvard University to digitize the Ralph Lieberman Archive of Renaissance and Baroque Architecture.
Ralph Lieberman is an art historian and photographer. He has taught at various institutions, including Williams College, Harvard University, and the Rhode Island School of Design. Lieberman began photographing buildings while completing his Ph.D. at the Institute of Fine Arts. He supplied photographs for his own publications, chief among them Renaissance Architecture in Venice, 1450?1540 (Abbeville Press, 1982) and The Church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli in Venice (Garland, 1986). Lieberman has also provided illustrations for other scholars' work, most notably Claudia Lazzaro's The Italian Renaissance Garden (Yale University Press, 1990); Leon Satkowski's Giorgio Vasari: Architect and Courtier (Princeton University Press, 1993); and Eugene J. Johnson and Michael J. Lewis's Drawn from the Source: The Travel Sketches of Louis I. Kahn (MIT Press, 1996). In addition to the collection at Harvard University, Lieberman's photographs may be found in art historical study collections such as those at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC and the Frick Art Reference Library.
