Edgar Degas, The Dance Class (probably 1874). The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Bequest of Mrs. Harry Payne Bingham, 1986 (1987.47.1). Image © The Metropolitan Museum of Art

I chose this painting by Edgar Degas primarily because of my love of dance, especially ballet. Since Degas tended to depict dance from a “behind-the-scenes” perspective of the dancer, looking at this image makes me feel as if I am actually taking part of the “Dance Class.”
