Now available: Wriston Art Center Galleries (Lawrence University)
ARTstor and the Wriston Art Center at Lawrence University are now sharing more than 1,200 images of artworks in the Digital Library. The collection in ARTstor consists of selections from special collections of early 20th century German art, Japanese prints, and Ancient and Byzantine coins. The La Vera Pohl collection of German Expressionists consists of approximately 200 prints, paintings, and drawings by 20th century German artists, including Wassily Kandinsky, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Paul Klee, Oskar Kokoschka, August Macke, Emil Nolde, Max Pechstein, and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. The collection of Japanese woodblock prints includes a wide range of ukiyo-e works from the 18th through 20th centuries. There are approximately 200 prints by artists such as Yoshu Chikanobu, Keisai Eisen, Utagawa Hiroshige, Shiro Kasamatsu, Hasui Kawase, Torii Kiyonaga, Toyohara Kunichika, Utagawa Kunisada, Ohara Shoson, Utagawa Toyokuni, and Hiroshi Yoshida. The museum will also share approximately 800 images of coins, including 700 from the Ottilia M. Buerger Collection of Ancient and Byzantine Coins. Starting in the 1950s, Ottilia Buerger (class of 1938) assembled a collection of rare coins that is widely regarded as one of the finest in the United States, which she bequeathed to Lawrence University in 2001.
The Wriston Art Center Galleries at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin was established in 1989. Selections from Lawrence University’s art holdings, which comprise more than 3,000 objects in a variety of media, are regularly exhibited in the Center’s galleries.
