New: Two collections of contemporary art from the California College of the Arts

The California College of the Arts (CCA) has contributed nearly 8,500 images of international and American contemporary art to the Artstor Digital Library. This contribution provides deeper coverage of postmodern global art in Artstor, an area in high demand in our community.
The California College of the Arts: Contemporary Art Project collection includes more than 5,400 images from artists across the world and it spans the period of c. 1940 to c. 2005. The collection was formed by the College as a representative study resource.

It provides a retrospective of seminal and acclaimed artists in the field, including Louise Bourgeois, Joseph Beuys, Magdalena Abakanowicz, Jean Michel Basquiat, Marlene Dumas, Peter Doig, Shirin Neshat, Chris Ofili and Hiroshi Sugito, among hundreds of others. Their work includes diverse traditional and emerging media.

The California College of the Arts: Capp Street Project Archive collection in Artstor, based on Capp Street Project (CSP) Archive, represents the work of more than 50 installation artists and cooperatives from 1984 through 1994 in comprehensive views of around 70 site-specific works. CSP was established by Ann Hatch as an experimental space in the early 1980s with the first installation art residency program in the county at a house on Capp Street San Francisco.

CSP became part of the Wattis Institute, California College of the Arts in 1998. Progressive and provocative artists prevail among CSP alumnae, including Kara Walker, Bill Viola, Mona Hatoum, James Turrell, Terry Fox, Janine Antoni, and Gary Hill, to name a few. CSP Archive received support for digitization from an NEA grant.

The California College of the Arts (CCA) was established in 1907 by the German cabinet maker Frederick Meyer, who aspired to integrate art, design, and craft as inspired by the Arts & Crafts Movement. With campuses in San Francisco and Oakland, CCA promotes an interdisciplinary approach and the integration of study and practice with society in the fields of art, design, and writing
