The Phillips Collection has contributed nearly 1,000 additional images of its holdings, bringing the total in Artstor close to 3,150. As the first museum of modern art in the country approaches its centennial in 2021, we are pleased to offer more selections from its groundbreaking collection begun by Duncan Phillips (1886-1966).

Casting a spotlight on modernism, and with a growing legacy of contemporary acquisitions, the scope of the Collection may be inferred from select images from our latest launch: Threads of the modernist narrative can be read in a plein-air landscape by Gustave Caillbotte, 1884, the Surrealist, neo-classical Horses of Attica, c. 1928, by Giorgio de Chirico and the lessons of Cubism distilled to simplicity in the Still Life, 1953 by Giorgio Morandi. A contemporary acquisition, Three Masks, 2006, by Susan Rothenberg carries the genre of self-portrait to the point of “broken portraiture,” in the artist’s words.  The evolution of the medium of photography, a rapidly expanding facet of the collection, may be discerned in the sequence of Lower Manhattan, by Alfred Stieglitz, 1910, Mes Petites effigies by Annette Messager, 1989-1990, and The Gang, 2006, by Eric Fischl.
