ARTstor staff will attend two conferences in May: the 44th International Congress on Medieval Studies (ICMS) and the Annual Meeting of the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS).

44th International Congress on Medieval Studies (ICMS)

May 7 – 10, 2009

ARTstor staff will attend the International Congress on Medieval Studies in Kalamazoo, Michigan from May 7 to May 10. ARTstor representatives are available to meet with attendees; please contact User Services at userservices@artstor.org to schedule an appointment. Annual Meeting of the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS)

ARTstor staff will attend two conferences in April: the Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA) Annual Conference and the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI) Spring Task Force Meeting.

ARLIS NA 2009 Annual Conference
Indianapolis, IN
April 16 – 21, 2009
Saturday, April 18:

  • 3:45 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. – Women Artists and Technology: Strategies for Capturing and Archiving the Cyber-Feminist Voice in the Santa Fe room. Sarah Falls (ARTstor User Services Associate) will moderate this panel that will explore the level of Web 2.0 content creation by women artists, who now have critical voices and collective power.

Sunday, April 19:

  • 11:00a.m. to 12:30 p.m. – Computerized Gaming in Libraries and the Academy: Collections Development, Service Provision and Future Directions in the Santa Fe room. Stephanie Krueger (ARTstor Library Relations) will moderate this panel presenting views from both academics and archivists on computerized gaming as a field of academic pursuit as well as an object of library collections development and service provision.
  • 3:45 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. – New Voices in the Profession in the Santa Fe room. Sarah Falls (ARTstor User Services Associate) will moderate this panel, which will showcase emerging professionals in Art and Visual Resources Librarianship and new ways of thinking about old problems, up-and-coming ideas, and a glimpse of the academic interests of the newest members of ARLIS/NA.
  • 3:45 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. – Visual Literacy: What, Why, How? in the Marriott meeting rooms 7 and 8. Carole Ann Fabian (ARTstor Planning, Outreach & Communications Officer) will co-present with Barbara Rockenbach (Director of Undergraduate & Library Research Education, Yale University Library) and Ian McDermott (Assistant Librarian, Yale Center for British Art) and will discuss visual literacy efforts taking place across academic disciplines, in libraries and in visual resource collections.

Monday, April 20:

  • 12:00p.m. to 1:30 p.m. – ARTstor User Group Lunch Meeting in Marriott meeting rooms 2 and 4. Learn about what’s new in ARTstor including Associated Images — a new discoverability feature; an update on ARTstor collections; and new collaborative directions for creating, hosting and managing local collections. Presentations will be followed by a Q&A session; session participants are encouraged to submit questions in advance to userservices@artstor.org.

Monday April 6:

  • 3:15 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. – Using Network Effects to Produce More Useful Results: ARTstor Collaborative Filtering project session in the Lake Calhoun Room. James Shulman (ARTstor President) and William W. Ying (ARTstor CIO) will report on the choices made in the preparation and release of the ‘Associated Images’ feature and discuss other methods that can also be employed to provide users with particularly meaningful search results in large complex datasets.

Society of Architectural Historians (SAH) Annual Meeting

Wednesday, April 1:

    6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. – Opening Reception and SAHARA Launch Celebration in the Pasadena Conference Center, Lower Level. The 62nd Annual Meeting of the Society of Architectural Historians officially opens with this evening’s welcome reception.

Thursday, April 2:

    12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. – SAHARA Information Session in the Pasadena Conference Center, Room 206. Pauline Saliga (SAH Executive Director) Dietrich Neumann (SAH President) James Shulman (ARTstor President) and Ann Whiteside (SAHARA Project Director) will host an informational session on the Society’s new online archive of digital images for teaching and research.

Friday, April 3:

    2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. – SAHARA Drop-in Sessions in the Pasadena Conference Center, Room 208. Carole Ann Fabian (ARTstor Planning, Outreach & Communications Officer) and Megan Marler (ARTstor Project Manager) will be on hand to demonstrate one-on-one how members can contribute images to the SAHARA online collection.

Thursday, April 2:

    10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. – Workshop: From Access to Zooming: An Introduction to the ARTstor Digital Library in Parliament Room 3-4. Stephen Alsa (ARTstor Library Relations Outreach Associate) will offer a guided tour of ARTstor, surveying the Digital Library’s collections and exploring helpful tips for actively integrating ARTstor into the curriculum and related course materials.

Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) 14th National Conference

ARTstor staff will host a booth in the exhibit hall throughout the conference and provide informal presentations about ARTstor collections, features and services.

Saturday, March 14:

  • 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. – Round table session: Integrating Provided Digital Resources into Collections. Sarah Falls (ARTstor Outreach and Instruction Librarian) will facilitate a discussion on integrating images resources into new teaching and learning environments.

Wednesday, March 18:

  • 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. – The Hosting Advisory Group is comprised of visual resource professionals, librarians and technical staff from participating institutions who work closely with ARTstor staff in shaping future directions for the hosting program and to advise on the development of new tools and related services. This meeting is open only to members of the Advisory Group.
  • 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. – VRA Plenary Session: Fair Use / Fair Dealing; Which Should Give You More Comfort? Kenneth Crews (Director of Copyright Advisory Office, Columbia University) and Giuseppina D’Agostino (Professor, Osgoode Hall Law School at York University) will present; Cara Hirsch (ARTstor Assistant Counsel) will moderate a panel discussion.

Thursday, March 19:

  • 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. – New Strategies for Digital Asset Discovery. Dustin Wees (ARTstor Director of Metadata and Cataloging) and Rebecca Price (University of Michigan) will discuss new strategies for digital asset discovery.
  • 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m – ARTstor User Group Meeting. ARTstor at the CNI Task Force meeting in Washington, D.C.

ARTstor staff will attend the upcoming Coalition for Networked Information (CNI) Task Force meeting on December 8, 2008. Pauline Saliga (Society of Architectural Historians), Ann Whiteside (MIT), and Carole Ann Fabian, (ARTstor) will co-present on SAH Architectural Resources Archive — an ongoing collaborative effort among SAH, scholars of architectural history, libraries, librarians and ARTstor.

ARTstor at Southeastern College Art Conference (SECAC) Annual Conference

ARTstor staff will present at the upcoming Southeastern College Art Conference (SECAC) Annual Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana. At the ARTstor booth and update session, the community will have the opportunity to learn about new collections in the Digital Library, and the recently launched ARTstor site that introduces a new interface design and faster, more nimble performance.

ARTstor breakfast at ALA annual conference

ARTstor will hold a participants’ meeting on Monday, June 30 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the annual American Libraries Association conference in Anaheim, CA.

The agenda will include a collections update, a discussion of interdisciplinary uses of ARTstor, and a technology update with a focus on ARTstor Beta—our new Digital Library interface and software platform.

We will also be available for individualized meetings, which can be scheduled in advance by emailing userservices@artstor.org
