New version of the Offline Image Viewer (OIV) available

NewArtstor has released the latest version of its Offline Image Viewer (OIV).

OIV enables instructors to give classroom presentations using larger images from the Artstor Digital Library (up to 3200 pixels wide) along with local content without being connected to the Internet. You can create digital slide show presentations that feature side-by-side comparisons, zooming and panning, and the ability to customize text on the slides.

OIV 4.0 includes the following new features:

  • Compatible with Mac OS X 10.10 and Windows 8.
  • Link to image viewer – clicking the link to image viewer icon on an image will open that image in the image viewer within the Digital Library.
  • Embedded hyperlinks – you can now embed hyperlinks in your OIV slides.
  • Saving to legacy format—this version of OIV allows presentations to be saved in OIV 2.6 format so that they can be opened by OIV version 2.6 and above (without image viewer linking functionality). This version can also open OIV 3.X files.

A bug that was affecting dual-screen presentations has also been fixed.

To install OIV 4.0, first uninstall any previous version, log into your account, and follow the directions on our Help site.

Using the OIV off campus

Did you know you can show your Offline Image Viewer presentations off-campus? There are several options for transporting OIV files and presenting them at other institutions or conferences.First, you will need to save your OIV presentation to a portable storage device, such as a CD or thumb drive. For detailed instructions, please see: “Saving presentations.”

Next you will need a copy of the OIV program to open this file at the remote location. There are two options for doing so:

  • If you have internet access, Download the OIV installation file from ARTstor online. Use the remote presentation computer to launch ARTstor and log onto your ARTstor account. Then, go to the “Tools” toolbar menu and select the “Download Offline Viewer” option. This will download a copy of the installation file to the remote presentation computer. Then, you can install the software; for detailed instructions, please see “Installing OIV.”
  • If you do not have internet access, Save the OIV installation file to a portable storage device, whether the same one you used to save the presentation file, or a different one. This way, you will have a copy of the installation file, which you can use to install OIV onto the remote presentation computer. In step #7 of the installation process for PC or Macs, use your computer’s directory to browse to the location for the portable storage device before downloading the installation file.

Once you have installed OIV at the remote presentation computer you will be able to open your .prs or .shw file from the portable storage device you have stored it on.

  • Start the OIV program
  • Go to the “File” toolbar menu and select the “Open” option.
  • The computer’s directory will open. Use it to browse to the location of the drive for the portable storage device, find your presentation file, and then click the “Open” button.
  • Your original presentation file will open up on the remote presentation computer, just as you initially saved it to the portable storage device.

 Quick Tip:

Reducing the size of your presentation files will make them easier to transport, since you can fit more files onto the same portable storage medium. For more information, please see “Creating smaller files.”
