Spence (b. 1947) is a New York-based artist known for his abstract paintings. He has exhibited widely in solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States, and his work is represented in the permanent collections of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among others. He received a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in painting in 1987 and a Guggenheim Fellowship in painting in 1994. Beginning in 1994, Spence taught at Bennington College, Vermont, for many years.
