The Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum has contributed more than 8,200 images from its permanent collection to the Artstor Digital Library.

The Cooper-Hewitt is the only museum in the United States devoted exclusively to historic and contemporary design. The Museum presents compelling perspectives on the impact of design on daily life through active educational and curatorial programming.

The Museum’s diverse collection spans thirty centuries of historic and contemporary design, including seventeenth-century Japanese tsuba, Parisian parasol designs, postmodern glassware, modular toys, and fabric about the future. The extensive selection in Artstor offers an eclectic array of media and objects: wallpaper samples, textile fragments, kimonos, vintage photographs, ceramics, jewelry, prints, drawings, plans, to name just a few.

The Museum was founded in 1897 by Amy, Eleanor, and Sarah Hewitt, granddaughters of industrialist Peter Cooper. A branch of the Smithsonian since 1967, the Cooper Hewitt is housed in the landmark Andrew Carnegie Mansion on Fifth Avenue in New York City.
